What happens if a whistleblower reports a bid-rigging or other type of illegal scheme?

The whistleblower is afforded certain protections and benefits when they report a bid-rigging scheme.  This is articulated in the federal False Claims act.  The False Claim Act has a qui tam provision, allowing whistleblowers to receive significant compensation when their reporting leads to the prosecution of a company or individual involved in fraud against a government agency or other entity.

In a qui tam lawsuit, the claimant can file a lawsuit on behalf of the U.S. government; if the suit is successful, whistleblowers can receive up to 30 percent of any money recovered for the government as a whistleblower reward.
